lamp2

its worked out pretty well. i am exploring altenatives for the clips, as well as tryign to make sure it stays level
instead of several pieces of paper, i would have one whole one.
also the strings hang much more shallow. i have bought a light, but i'm just waiting to find somewhere i can hang it.
what colours for the paint do you think? somthing different. red, black and... yellow? too aborigi-german?

erics 1st
I was terrified. Lying in the back of the ambulance racing through the streets. Not terrified because I had just been hurt, or because my colleagues were had been panicking around me, but because of the implications of my inconvenient need for medical attention. Imagine the people driving to work who we cut off with our sirens, and sped past! The bike riders unnerved by the speed of our vehicle, sending them off balance, thinking they should curse, but not sure it is was ok. But I could feel them, seeping through the cracks in the ambulance, the thoughts of ‘why did you have to make me late to work?’ and ‘here we are again, moving over for the dying’. That terrified me – the thoughts of hundreds of people inconvenienced for a second or two, beaten to the lights, which might have meant they couldn’t have a parking space close to their work. It was my fault that these people would have a down day.

lamp

I’ve started designing a lamp. its probably not as alternative as brayden's or raphs, or any of the other ones that people have brought in, but I like it so far, and I’d like some constructive criticism.
My idea is that paper is virginal when it is new, and this lamp hangs it up for interaction. The lamp is a little under 3 metres across, and the height of a roll of that printing paper (about 700). The idea is that it is hung so that the middle of the paper is about shoulder height, so that the bottom of the paper is about 1200 mm above the ground. Instruments to interact with the paper hang in view, so that viewers are enticed to step into the lamp. I like the idea of a glowing halo with legs sticking out from underneath, encapsulating them, and throwing shadows that can only be seen from the outside. Inside, it is pure white, virginal – like a cross between an igloo and a womb. There are also tools to interact with the paper – to draw and cut and stick. The idea is that the paper is there to be changed, and at the end of the session is taken down and replaced with new clean paper.
I was considering hanging a smaller one nearby, at children’s height, so that kids could have their own special canvas. In this way, the actual lamp would be too small for the kids to fit in. Or, I could have some sort of stepladder so that they children could interact with the adults one. I’m not sure which one is better. Whether to bring children and adults into the same forum on the same canvas, or to separate it. Of course, the results of each are able to be viewed from the exterior.
I also thought to dangle something – such as a question, from the light in the lamp – so that it is only visible and readable once inside. This would give the illustrators/authors/viewers stimuli to inform their creation and keep the content within some guidelines.
In summary, the lamp is an interactive exhibiting experience. It allows viewers to become illustrators and use the precious but replaceable paper to express themselves – possibly with stimuli.
