i would like to add another problem to the list which i think that everyone at some stage, including myself has been guilty of - negativity
I noticed in another comment that ben made that he was speculating about whether the bbq would actually work and was being slighty negative about it, give it a chance for crying out loud - you never know until you try and being to negative about something before hand is a good way to bring it down

I would also like to throw in a bit about using the word "problem". This is negative too- yes it gets the meaning across but it is not right to call people's priorities 'problems'. Better to say 'hey, this is normal cultuer in Australia, in uni and in courses' or 'the way people treat education in oz is fraught'.

And you think so because you want to experiment with working with a community - so it is a game. "can we have 20 highly charged bodies, hungry for engagement, not caring about the relevance of the content - coming together every week in an excited fashion - just like going to a party?"

If Y then lets take a shot at creating such a community.
If N then - even more reason to do something. So that we can fail.

Remember some people may not want you to get into their heads. Some may be locked in to ways that they cannot unravel -- because they see speaking about themselves as a sign of weakness. They have to be allowed to hide. Its not goodbut its not ours to decide.

Which is why I brought you the article yesterday.

Maybe some people still need more time to become enthusiastic, its one of those things that seems to just spring up, and maybe if we just go out on the picnic to have fun and not to solve problems people might be more engaged.
