sitr

the sets are done, they will be in today - and perhaps one of the most stressful production i have been a part of will let me concentrate on my acting.

fringe and hats

what are the dangers and flaws of the situation?
i assume this is logical and cautious hat.
i will ponder on thsi when i return from drinking tonight.

hand

and on another note, i burned my hand to fuck - at home the other day. its fucking gross and annoying. i feel so stupid

fringe and sitr

went ot fringe today and thought our lamps were shit compared to some of the stuff there. i was feeling negative, and wondering why i put so much effort into the lamp. i could understand why the museum wouldnt put more effort into lighting it - it lookes, as soumitri said - "shabby".
but then a wave came over me - they look shabby because they are not lit. they are a shining, beckoning, warming beacon, and without light they are just paper draped over stuff. the museum doesnt want to light them because a)its too hard and b)they look to shabby to light.
i wish i'd been there to install them. i ahve half a mind to steal my lamp back... but i have no car. and i'd look like a spoilt little brat. maybe i can have a bonfire outside - burning seems to be the call of the day.
then again, i'd like ot know the full story. it is because there are no powerpoints, it si because they arent tagged properly.
fuck susi macgregor, fuck her to hell.

on other word it was a very productive day at singing in the rain set painting. its so slow though! i spent form 8am to 5pm minus an hour for fringe and lunch to paint one flimsy set.
i hate it - never again

diagram

i thought this diagram was really effective in describing the market. shown at friday night;s session of open...

illusion of sustainibility

i was thinking, as i was handed a bag for the design conference the other night, that these bags are everywhere. they started as those greenbags in safeway and coles. but how green are they?
i want to find out what the material is, whether they are biodegradable, how many are sold in australia, or have been sold; compare this amount to plastic bags, compare per weight, how long before they completely replace the normal plastic bags.

are they just a very temporary solution, and in 10 years we'll be asking why we ever produced and sold so many green bags.

documentation x2

although its important to have a documentation which is different, we need somehting tangible as well.
we were talking about a booklet, with all the information there, so we can refer back to it, and also a huge visual poster we can display. so theres two ideas - one to display and one to keep. i think a video or a visual aid is not so good for refering back to when you need information - especially if you want ot find out the name of someone who wrote an article which soumitri gave us.
so what do we need out of the booklet one?:
  • reference-ability.
  • ease of use inc index, contents etc.
  • visual documentation as well.
  • something for the members of the corp game
  • something to keep - like a textbook from an important class.

what do we need out of the visual?:

  • something engaging
  • something which attracts the viewer
  • entertains while being informative
  • a medium which is informative for people outside of the corp game

is it possible to combine them?:

  • yes, but it means comprimising both.
  • so... no, not really?
  • perhaps in something like a interactive .swf which is informative for the viewer (can be put in a kiosk) and is also a very relevant way to us because we can easy refer back to it, due to the contents layout.

so what wil it be? the two docos - the booklet and the poster; or the flash interactive animation...

tea party

I was thinking – and we were talking about it on Friday night. We’re sick of everyone going out from the class and getting shitty hudson’s coffee. Sometimes I feel like tea too, and I don’t want to pay that much for some shitty tea.
So, why not have a teapot in that little kitchenette? We could get a kettle, a teapot, some mugs, some sugar etc. and some nice tea. Something that can brew and something we can wait for it to be ready. Soemthing a little less instant.
Then, because it’s a great idea to get out of the building, would it be possible to get up on the roof, or somewhere nearby which is out of the building. Somewhere a little more peaceful, and not office-blocky.
Julian was suggesting we could also have a coffee pot to brew good coffee in.
I think what we’re trying to get at is that we want something natural, community oriented and cheaper. It would also be better for the environement – saving 10 paper cups each day.
If worst comes to worst, could Hudson’s make your coffee in your own mug, which you keep in the id level 5? I will bring one of my cups in and get my man at café 108 to make it in there.

singin in the rain2

there is always something in the pipeline.
You’ve probably forgotten that I’ve got a production of Singin in the Rain going on. I attended a production meeting with the crew and theatre coordinators today. The results of which are me doing lots of work by myself, while trying to fulfil all my other commitments, including being in the musical, uni, work, and friendship time. Lets not forget time for me.
I know I can’t let the people in the musical down, and it will mean that my marks will suffer – though I don’t intend to fail.
The greastest victim of this is the corporation game – as it is the subject I want to put the most effort into, but however I can’t as I don’t have the time. One of the parts of the CG is the TSB. I’m heading home in the first few days of the holidays and I want to get some recycled timber from the place near me in Canberra – I have time from the 15th of October until the 20th of November, and I want to spend that whole time with my wood, carving it into tsb. I wonder if soumitri will grant me an extension.
;)

finally, something to show for the process. i'm sure i'm not finished, though i am happy with these work in progress.
i was thinking, if we're happy with the result, but we want to always be involved in the process, then whats the harm of never finishing? never saying this is the final?

individuality2

individuality

I realised that I need to be more individual with my presentation. I want to apply this different thinking, and learning in other ways to everything I do in design – because whats the point of doing something which has been done before. Especially if I can create something more vibrant, entertaining, and ultimately something which produces (oops – naughty word) incredible.. objects, systems etc.
I want to be different and I want to be proud of it. I’m sick of being stuck in A3 folio bound along the left hand side, 3 pages of thumbnails, copic rendering, etc. I’M GOING TO BREAK OUT!!!!
alice was telling me about thsi guy in her class who did his final architecture presentation in spraypaint/stencil. how cool, how individual!
i'm going to leave behind the constraints etc, and be myself for a change...!
lets fuck off this magazine idea - and do something which is ours - an A2 poster, or a presentation, flash animation, flip book, performance, song, window presentation. something which is interesting, different, but still fulfills the needs we have. but overall soemthing whcih hasn't been done before... lets stop beign the sheep///

who has time to do more?

re-designing the course
  • keep the basic content similar (i.e questioning technique, education, spider)
  • design magazine company - soumitri as editor
  • making a lateral thinking, how to learn and problem solving bumper edition
  • have a publication at the end of the semester inclusing documentation of process, soumitri's lectures, photos and articless etc. the structure of the course (when what will be learnt approximately when set out in a timetable)
  • all wear black - designers
  • must not repeat previous content (assuming this would run for a few semesters)
  • mentors within the class (mafia)
  • previous semesters players as consultants
  • different departments
  • moving around between departments
  • keep lectures form soumitri, and also publish them
  • guest speakers on education etc
  • continual documentation of the learning process, not crappy writing, or soething which has been thrown together at the last minute
  • LCP, input and soumitri will determine individual grades
  • there should be a glossy publication at the end

the main idea is to do what we did this semester, but include documentation so that we can have a reference, and something to show for it in the end.

travel

my plans to travel at the end of this year have fallen through. i was plannign to go with a friend of mine from brisbane - adelaide. but we feel like its a bit of a jump in our friendship to spend 6 weeks together! why is it so hard? why cant we be more easy going and let it be what it is? its much more complicated than that though. its just dissapointing. i wonder if i'll just end up travelling alone. i'm determined to do something...

theend

I was thinking about my own enthusiasm for studio, and what it will be like when the corporation game ends. I have no idea. I think I will try and stay in Melbourne for another month to finish the tanto sushi board, but I will miss wearing a suit. This studio has changed my thinking so much, on listening, creativity, breaking things down into smaller bits, growing, learning. I guess I’m afraid that when it ends, no studio will be challenging in the same way the corporation game is.

ilovepostsecret

i decided since i can't tell you a secret, maybe i can post one.
now you'll want to knwo which one's mine, i'll let you know if it pops up.
i'll send the f-er tomorrow

i wanted to tell you something personal tonight, somehting about me, and what i feel. something that opens me up and makes me vunerable. something which i'd be perfectly happy to tell strangers with no faces on the internet, but that which i cannot admit to my friends. so i chickened out, and here i am again, telling you about my uni, letting it take up my life, revealling what i have done, thought and produced - but no more. to you, all i am is just what i tell here, and what you hear when you see me. we're not close because we can't let go of our inhibitions, or let down our fences.
we can never be more than this

games1

i think we need to think about games we;re goign to play on monday - can i suggest people bring their own games? i am bringing tunnel ball and pass the orange, and possibly the life savers on toothpicks one... do other people have ideas?

ak

that adam kahane article that soumitri gave us is really important to our thinking and listening on monday - find it here.

sometimes

dear ben:

Sometimes things don't go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail.
Sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war,
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best intentions do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.

6footlamp5

Dear blog. I have neglected to inform you of recent happenings.
The lamp was going well, to a point today. I got the base (a t-shaped section of a tree trunk), which has a slice cut off at the base, so that it is stable. Now it also has 2 holes with one pole inserted. The other polewas once in there as well, housing the light, but as I forgot to get the whole thing examined by an electrician, I needed to rip the pole out. I took that whole ripping thing too literally, and cracked the soft aluminium pole.
I will try and get the whole thing certified by an electrician after workshop session tomorrow. Theres one hanging around college tomorrow, so that’s where I’ll be. Is it worthwhile hiring an electrician to certify all of our lamps before we submit them to fringe? If we do it when we have the lamps in one place at one time we could potentially split the costs and make it possible for everyone to exhibit…
Thanks for your understanding, blog, I will try and keep you more up to date

oracle2

oracle1

The oracle of Delphi

  1. One person is allocated the role of the Master, who runs the game and directs ideas according to the instructions.
  2. Ice breaker – word at a time: The group sits or stands in a circle and tells a story, each person saying one word at a time. The story needs to make reasonable sense.
  3. Ice breaker – clap: again in a circle, the group needs to ‘pass the clap’ around the circle as fast as possible.
  4. The people split into their own chosen groups – each group should have a piece of paper (A4 or larger – the bigger the better), and some ink. The paper and the ink need to be contrasting colours, preferably white and black. The groups should be up to 5 people. 3 is ideal.
  5. Get the groups to do a rorshach print. It is important not to let them know what the next steps in the game are.
  6. (divergent thinking) Let them interpret the print, noticing its qualities, not just objects that the print looks like. They need to note down these words on paper which can be cut up later. People tend to see animals, faces, and sexual scenes (according to rorshach). They need to have a look at the weight of the ink, line thickness, thin spots, isolation of blobs, joining of blobs, the symmetry, looking up close and from a distance; and of course from different angles. Let them use verbs and abstract terms, instead of nouns, and encourage people to string words together. Also, let all ideas be privileged, not just those the entire group agrees on.
  7. (reordering the thinking)The sheet with the words must now be cut up, and all the words (or phrases) separated. They are now stuck on another sheet of paper- reordered in some fashion. Whether this is in a list, mind map, flow chart etc, is up to them. Perhaps it might be useful for the team to identify the words which represent the team’s main interpretation of the print.
  8. (convergent thinking) The team now uses these words which have been identified as important, to write a philosophy. This philosophy can be an idea, slogan, ideal, saying, proverb, adage, riddle, etc.; and it can be narrowed down to be specific to the group’s direction. For example, in the corporation game within industrial design, the philosophy could be a slogan for a design corporation, or an ideal within design, such as ‘less is more’.
This is the hardest part of the game, though needn’t take the longest time. If the other parts have been filled well, then it shouldn’t be too hard to find an excellent saying.
  9. Finally, the philosophy needs to be written on the back of the print, together with the team members’ names and presented to the group in a short talk. The philosophy should be shown to be related to the print.
  10. Following the presentations, the group again forms a circle and takes turns in saying ‘I feel’ statements, for the improvement of the game, and the running of the game. It also acts as a final act of the game.
